A magistrate court in Kano has found local tailor Mubarak Yusuf guilty of environmental pollution caused by excessive noise from his sewing machine and generator, which had become a disturbance to his neighbors.
The case was filed by the Kano State Ministry of Environment after residents lodged complaints, citing the persistent noise—especially at night—as a major disruption to their peace and rest.
According to a statement from the ministry, although Yusuf denied the allegations, the court ruled against him after finding evidence that contradicted his claims.
The court, before sentencing, conducted an on-site inspection of his shop and confirmed that the noise from his machines was preventing people from sleeping at night, thereby violating Section 7 of the Public Health Law of 2019.
As a result, the court ruled to restrict his working hours, allowing him to operate from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm.
Reacting to the judgment, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Dahir Hashim, commended the court for the decision, reiterating the ministry’s commitment to ensuring that individuals and businesses adhere to environmental and public health standards.
