A State High Court in Lokoja has removed Alhaji Tijani Ahmed-Anaje as the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, ruling that his appointment was unlawful.

Justice Umar Salisu, in his judgment on Monday, barred Ahmed-Anaje from parading himself as the traditional ruler.

Disputed Appointment

The case was brought by Chief Daudu Adeku-Ojiah, Hussain Yusuf, and Abdulrahaam Suberu, who challenged the selection process initiated by former Governor Yahaya Bello. They argued that the appointment violated the 1997 Edict governing ascension to the throne.

The plaintiffs sought a declaration that the appointment was null and void, as it did not follow due process. They also requested an injunction preventing the state government from recognising Ahmed-Anaje as the Ohinoyi.

Court Verdict and Reactions

Justice Salisu upheld the plaintiffs’ claims and ordered a fresh selection process by the Ebiraland kingmakers.

Following the ruling, Governor Ahmed Ododo called for calm. However, the State Attorney-General, Muzi Abdullahi, confirmed plans to appeal the decision, expressing confidence that the verdict would be overturned.

Over 70 candidates were originally screened for the position following the passing of the late Ohinoyi, Alhaji Ado Ibrahim, in October 2024.
