Court stops EFCC, others from detaining ex-Zamfara governor

Federal High court, Abuja, has ordered that the Former governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari should not be detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) or the Independent Corrupt Practises and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) while the motion on notice is being heard and decided.

Additionally, the court barred the Department of State Services (DSS) from holding the incoming senator.

The order was given by Justice Donatus Okorowo in a decision he made on an ex-parte motion on Monday.

The judge commanded the respondents (EFCC, ICPC, and DSS) to provide justification for not granting the petitions requested in the motion ex-parte at the next adjourned date.

“The respondents were, however, restrained from detaining the applicant until the return date for the order to show cause,” he ruled.

The matter was adjourned to June 8 for the respondents to show cause.

The former governor of Zamfara requested a court order in an expert move prohibiting the EFCC, ICPC, and DSS from detaining him in order to prevent him from taking part in the Federal Republic of Nigeria President’s June 13 proclamation of the 10th Senate.

Yari, who declared his intention to run for Senate President, claimed that some members of his political party, the All Progressives Congress, were using the respondents and their agents to harass and threaten him with arrest on fabricated charges in the days before the Senate’s first session, when nominations and the election of presiding officers would take place.
