Customs doesn’t have access to details of $3.2bn Modernization project – CG

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has stated that the agency was not privy to details of the country’s 3.2 trillion dollar Customs modernization project.

On Wednesday, the Customs Controller General, Adewale Adeniyi, was represented before the Senate Joint Committee on Finance by Deputy Controller General Mba Musa.

The Committee had requested clarification on the agreement signed by the Federal Government on the Modernization of Nigeria Customs, but Musa informed the legislators that Nigeria Customs was not aware of the details of the modernization deal.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) had in April 2023 approved the Nigeria Customs Service modernisation project, also known as e-customs, despite a court order restraining the Federal Government from going on with the initiative.

Speaking further on the waivers and Concessions, he stated that the Customs has lost of 1.3 trillion naira in 2023 owing to waivers and concessions granted to investors, adding that otherwise the Nigeria Customs would have generated more to the nation’s purse in 2023.
