Embattled human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi appeared this morning at the Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti.
During the previous hearing, Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun reserved a ruling on Farotimi’s bail application until December 20 and ordered his remand in custody.
Farotimi’s counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, filed a preliminary objection, urging the court to dismiss the charge.
He argued that the charge was not grounded in law, as the offence of defamation is not recognized under the Ekiti State Criminal Law of 2021.
Dressed in a black top and matching pants, Farotimi arrived at the court premises around 9:45 am under tight security.
He was greeted by his supporters, who raised their fists in solidarity and cheered for his struggle for justice and freedom.
“Justice for Dele!”, his followers added.
Dele Farotimi is facing prosecution at a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, on allegations of defaming Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Afe Babalola.
His arrest has sparked widespread public criticism, with numerous Nigerians demanding his immediate release.
Notable figures advocating for his freedom include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and politician and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore.
