The conversion of the state School of Marine Technology into a polytechnic has received unanimous approval from the members of the Delta State House of Assembly.
Following the House’s passage of a bill repealing the Delta State School of Marine Technology, Burutu, Law of 2006 and enacting the Delta State Polytechnic, Burutu Law of 2023, the measure was approved.
The MPs emphasised that by enacting the bill, the maritime School would be upgraded from its existing status as a school to one that may grant a Higher National Diploma.
The MPs unanimously approved for the school to be promoted to a polytechnic for the maritime school to have a full chance of enhanced funding on the merits of the bill during Wednesday’s session.
Also during the day’s sitting, four other bills gained accelerated legislative actions, sailing through the first, second and third readings just as they were all passed.
They include the High Court (Amendment) Law 2023, College of Health Science and Technology Law 2022, Delta State Creative Industry Development Law, 2023 and Delta State Thanksgiving Day Law, 2023.
According to reports, all the five passed bills, except the Delta State Thanksgiving Day Bill, were forwarded to the State Assembly on Tuesday, April 25, by the State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, and read at Tuesday’s Plenary by the Speaker, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.
Leading debates in each of the bills at Wednesday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, who is also the Governor-elect of the state, Sheriff Oborevwori, the Majority leader of the House, Ferguson Onwo, commended Governor Okowa for what he described as his forthrightness and proactive disposition in presenting the bills.
Also, the Speaker commended the lawmakers for their “legislative ingenuity” in the passage of the bills explaining that the feat spoke volumes of their commitment and dedication to their assignment.
Meanwhile, the Delta House of Assembly has adjourned plenary till May 2.
