Diddy set for early prison release amid ongoing appeal battles

Rapper Sean Combs, widely known as Diddy, is set to be released from prison earlier than planned as he pursues an appeal of his four-year sentence.

Diddy, currently serving time on prostitution-related charges, now has a revised release date of April 25, 2028 about six weeks ahead of the previously scheduled June 4, 2028, according to Federal Bureau of Prisons records obtained by Page Six, as reported by The Sun. He is serving a 50-month term at Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution in New Jersey.

The updated release comes after his acceptance into a drug-abuse rehabilitation programme in November. A spokesperson for Combs said, “Mr Combs is an active participant in the Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP) and has taken his rehabilitation process seriously from the start. He is fully engaged in his work, focused on growth, and committed to positive change.”

Originally, his release was set for May 8, 2028, but had been pushed back to June 4, 2028, after alleged prison infractions, including consuming homemade alcohol and participating in an unauthorised three-way phone call. TMZ reported that the improvised alcohol was made from sugar, Fanta, and apples left to ferment for two weeks. Combs’ legal team disputed claims about the phone call, citing attorney-client privilege.

A representative told Page Six, “Mr Combs is in his first week at FCI Fort Dix and is focused on adjusting, working on himself, and doing better each day. As with any high-profile individual in a new environment, there will be many rumours and exaggerated stories throughout his time there—most of them untrue. We ask that people give him the benefit of the doubt, the privacy to focus on his personal growth with grace and purpose.”

Recently released images by TMZ showed Combs walking through the facility wearing a grey pullover and sweatpants, smiling at another inmate.

Before sentencing, he reflected on his situation in a four-page apology letter, writing, “I literally lost my mind. I’m sorry for that and always will be… I lost my way. My downfall was rooted in my selfishness. I have been humbled and broken to my core… The old me died in jail and a new version of me was born. Prison will change you or kill you – I choose to live.”

Combs celebrated his 56th birthday in prison with a pizza meal and reportedly works in the facility’s laundry unit.

Legal proceedings continue as he filed an appeal in December seeking immediate release or a sentence reduction, arguing prosecutorial failures and constitutional violations. Prosecutors opposed the appeal in February.

Combs has been in custody since his September 2024 arrest. He was convicted on two counts of transporting individuals to engage in prostitution but acquitted of racketeering and sex trafficking charges, which spared him a longer term. His team has also explored a presidential pardon from Donald Trump, who acknowledged the request, saying, “A lot of people have asked me for pardons. I call him Puff Daddy; he has asked me for a pardon.”
