The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Sunday, adjourned the collation of election results in the Bayelsa State Governorship Elections conducted on November 11, 2023.
The compilation of election results was suspended approximately two hours after the commencement of the process, which had been previously adjourned the previous night.
Professor Faruq Kuta, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, and the State Returning Officer for the Bayelsa election, adjourned the proceedings until 3 pm today.
The adjournment occurred following the collation of results from three out of the eight local government areas in the state, namely Kolokuma/Opokuma, Ogbia, and Yenegoa.
The outstanding local government areas include Brass, Ekeremor, Nembe, Sagbama, and Southern Ijaw.
The returning officer indicated that the outcomes from the outstanding local government areas are awaited. Sixteen political parties fielded candidates for the Bayelsa election.
Governor Duoye Diri, representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), faces his primary challenger in the form of Timipre Sylva, a former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and a former governor of the state.
Sylva, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election, previously served as the governor of Bayelsa from May 2007 to April 2008 and later from May 2008 to January 2012.
Similarly, governorship elections took place in Imo and Kogi states on Saturday. While the collation of results is currently ongoing in Kogi, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared a winner in Imo. Governor Hope Uzodimma of the APC emerged victorious, defeating Samuel Anyanwu of the PDP, Nneji Achonu of the Labour Party (LP), and 15 other opponents.
Uzodimma garnered 540,308 votes, surpassing his closest rivals—Anyanwu of the PDP, who secured 71,503 votes, and Achonu of the LP, with 64,081 votes.
