A Toyota Camry driver narrowly escaped death on Monday after a 40-foot loaded container fell onto his vehicle at Mile 2, en route to Apapa, Lagos State.
In a statement, Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), confirmed the driver’s rescue. The successful operation was made possible through the swift and coordinated efforts of LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
“The victim received immediate medical attention after being rushed to the hospital by the joint rescue team. Security during the operation was effectively maintained by Officers from the Kirikiri Police Division, who ensured a secure and orderly environment for the emergency responders. Following the rescue, the Toyota Camry was successfully removed from beneath the container,” the statement said in part.
Taofiq noted that efforts to remove the fallen container are ongoing, with LASTMA officers actively managing traffic to alleviate congestion and restore normalcy.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized the crucial need for truck drivers and owners to properly secure containers.
He highlighted that negligence in this regard poses significant risks to lives and property, urging strict adherence to road safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
