A devastating road accident at the Polo Roundabout in Jos, Plateau State, has resulted in the deaths of a driver and two others. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, involved a truck that veered off course at a high speed.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the details of the midnight tragedy. According to the state command:
“The truck reportedly lost control, resulting in a fatal crash that claimed the lives of the driver and two other persons,” the command said.
Peter Longsan, the FRSC Public Education Officer, pointed to a loss of control as the primary cause. He cautioned motorists against driving recklessly, “especially at odd hours when visibility may be poor and fatigue can impair judgment.” He further urged drivers “to always ensure their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on any journey, while also advising strict adherence to speed limits and traffic regulations.”
Those nearby at the time of the 2:30 a.m. crash described a scene of sudden chaos. Musa Ibrahim, a local security guard, recounted: “I was coming back from a night shift when I heard a loud bang. The truck was coming down at speed and just swerved before hitting the roundabout. By the time we got there, three people were not moving. It was terrible.”
Another resident, Grace Pam, noted that although help arrived quickly, the impact was too severe for the occupants. “It happened very fast. One moment, the road was quiet, the next moment, there was dust and screaming. People tried to help but it was already too late for the three of them,” she said, adding that “Drivers need to slow down, especially at night. This roundabout has seen too many accidents.”
In the wake of the tragedy, the FRSC has reminded the public “to avoid overloading and dangerous driving, stressing that compliance with safety measures remains key to reducing road crashes and saving lives.” Investigations remain ongoing to determine the full circumstances behind the fatal collision.
