One of Nigeria’s most consequential and renowned Public Relations expert, Dr. (Mrs) Nkechi Ali-Balogun went down memory lane at yesterday’s convocation ceremony of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) of the ‘fight’ she put up to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree from University of Lagos at over 60 years.

Enjoy It:

Yesterday, January 16, 2025, to be precise, marked another milestone in my life as I was formally awarded a Ph.D. degree in Mass Communication during the 55th Convocation of the prestigious University of Lagos, known as the university of choice. This achievement is a testament to my resilience and determination, especially considering the rigorous demands and challenges faced throughout this academic journey, particularly at the age of 60+.

Reflecting on the journey, I would like to express my profound gratitude to God for this great achievement, which did not come easily. There were countless times I nearly gave up due to the intensive demands of acquiring this degree. It was not funny. Yet, here I am today, with dogged determination and the inspiration of some dear friends, a proud holder of a Ph.D. in Mass Communication.”

I have learnt valuable lesson from this experience including:

• Age is not a barrier.

• Hold on tenaciously to your dreams. Stay focused and never let any situation deter you from achieving them.

• The grace of God abounds and is sufficient

Overall, I feel honoured to have completed this degree. The journey has been incredibly rewarding, serving as a significant learning curve in understanding human behavior. I am delighted and privileged to use this new level of knowledge to continue contributing to the field of mass communication, with a special focus on Public Relations.
