Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, on Tuesday defended the suspension of 18 elected local government chairmen by the State House of Assembly.

Speaking during a meeting with acting local government chairmen at the Government House in Benin City, Okpebholo explained the reasons behind the suspension. He cited the chairmen’s failure to account for N800 million allegedly contributed monthly to leaders of a political party.

The governor assured the acting chairmen of his full support, expressing confidence in their ability to deliver services that would drive grassroots development.

Okpebholo also pledged to back the acting chairmen, following the impeachment of their predecessors by local legislative arms, and urged them to prioritise effective governance for the benefit of their communities.
