The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has announced that Edo State now has a total of 2.6 million registered voters.
He further stated that sensitive materials for the election are ready and will be delivered to the Central Bank of Nigeria by early next week.
Speaking on Wednesday at the INEC Stakeholders Conference in Benin City, Yakubu also mentioned that mock accreditation had been successfully conducted in preparation for the election.
Additionally, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, emphasized the commitment of the force to ensuring a peaceful election in the state, affirming that the Nigerian Police Force is fully prepared for the task.
He said, “The big plan is to ensure an environment that will guarantee peace during the conduct of the election.”
He assured that the police force would deploy a large number of personnel, along with over 8,000 officers from sister agencies, to ensure security during the election.
He also issued a stern warning to potential troublemakers, advising them to stay away, and reiterated that quasi-security outfits and non-state actors would remain banned throughout the election period.
At the event, two traditional rulers represented the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Ewuare II.
One of them, delivering a message from the Oba, emphasized that the monarch remains apolitical but expects that whoever emerges victorious must prioritize the development of Edo State.
