Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has ordered a restriction on movement in Edo State ahead of the upcoming governorship election.

Edo residents will go to the polls on Saturday, September 21, 2024, to elect their governor. To ensure a smooth and secure process, the IGP has directed that all vehicular movement on roads, waterways, and other forms of transportation be restricted from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day.

According to a statement issued by the Force’s Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, exceptions will be made for essential services such as accredited media, electoral officials, ambulances, and emergency responders.

The IGP also imposed a ban on security aides and escorts accompanying VIPs to polling stations and collation centers, stressing that unauthorized security personnel and quasi-security outfits are not permitted to operate during the election. Additionally, the use of sirens by unauthorized vehicles is strictly forbidden to maintain a peaceful voting environment.

“Special attention will be given to individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, the elderly, and those with mobility challenges to ensure that polling stations in both urban and rural areas are accessible,” the statement added.

The IGP, through Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) for the Edo Gubernatorial Election, DIG Frank Emeka Mba, urged citizens to avoid making prank calls to the control room and advised that text messages are more effective for operational purposes.

The statement provided designated election lines for inquiries and reporting: DIG Election DIG Frank Mba at 07025000383, AIG Election AIG Benneth Igwe at 09085000029, and general control room numbers 08077773721 and 08037646272. The joint control room is being managed by the police and other relevant agencies involved in the electoral process.

The police encouraged Edo residents to report any suspicious activities that could undermine the integrity of the election or create disorder in any part of the state.

The IGP emphasised the importance of adhering to these directives to prevent interference or intimidation during the voting process. Political parties, candidates, and their supporters were urged to act responsibly and in accordance with electoral laws, with any violations subject to legal consequences.

The IGP reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to ensuring a safe and democratic environment for the election, calling for cooperation to ensure a fair and peaceful election in Edo and beyond.
