The Edo State Parole Board has reviewed 13 parole applications from inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Benin.
The Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Mr Aminu Suleman, confirmed this in a statement on Wednesday.
He explained that five of the applicants were shortlisted and are currently undergoing direct interviews to determine their suitability for early release.
The hearing, chaired by retired Justice Alero Edodo-Eruaga, followed an initial session held the previous week.
Suleman said the board assessed inmates based on good conduct, productivity while in custody, evidence of rehabilitation, and clear reintegration plans.
“This process is about giving a second chance while ensuring public safety. Our responsibility is to balance justice with rehabilitation in line with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019,” Justice Edodo-Eruaga was quoted as saying.
The board will forward its final recommendations to the Controller General of the NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, for approval.
Suleman stressed that parole extends beyond inmates themselves, as it strengthens community safety and supports national development.
He noted that the board also includes representatives from the correctional service, the Director of Public Prosecutions, PRAWA, the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria, the Nigerian Psychological Association, the Association of Medical Social Workers, and Edo Civil Society Organisation (EdoCSO).
