The Edo State Government has confirmed that the training of newly recruited forest guards will begin on June 5 as part of efforts to strengthen security in the state’s forest areas.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, Festus Ebea, who said the programme will be conducted at the Police Training School, Ogida Barracks in Benin City. Successful candidates are expected to report on or before 5:00 p.m. on the commencement date.

He noted that all recruits have already undergone security screening by the Department of State Services and completed medical examinations at Edo Specialist Hospital.

According to the statement, the training will run for six weeks, and participants are required to arrive with necessary documents while adhering strictly to the rules of the training centre.

The government advised candidates to contact the Office of the Commissioner for Public Safety and Security for any further clarification.

The recruitment of forest guards has drawn national attention in recent times, especially following rising insecurity incidents, including abductions in parts of the country.

It also follows a federal initiative announced by President Bola Tinubu to deploy 1,000 forest guards nationwide to help monitor forests and respond to criminal activities such as banditry and insurgency.
