EFCC arrests 19 Akwa Ibom varsity students for internet fraud

19 Akwa Ibom State University students have been detained by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for internet-related offences.

This information was made public by the commission on its website in a statement on Tuesday, saying that the suspects were detained on Friday, April 28, 2023.

The undergraduate students were detained at their private residences, Obong Abasi Lodge and Mfon Obong Lodge, which are situated at Ikot Akpadem in Akwa Ibom state’s Mkpat-Enin Local Government Area.

“19 undergraduates of Akwa Ibom State University, Mkpat-Enin, were on Friday, April 28, 2023, arrested by operatives of the Uyo Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for suspected internet-related offences.

“Their arrest followed several months of surveillance on their suspected involvement in romance scam, fraudulent cryptocurrency transactions and impersonation. They will be charged to court as soon as Investigations are concluded,” the commission said.

Items recovered from them include several laptops and mobile phones.
