The Kano Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into two suspects found with counterfeit US dollars totalling $899,800.

In a statement on X, the commission revealed that its investigation began after the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) intercepted the suspects—42-year-old Abubakar Hussaini and 53-year-old Sahabi Adamu—along Maiduguri Road in Wudil, Kano State.

The men were travelling in a commercial Golf 3 station wagon to Kila Village in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State when NDLEA operatives stopped and searched the vehicle. They discovered the fake currency hidden inside a Maggi Star seasoning carton.

The NDLEA handed the suspects and the seized exhibits over to the EFCC for further investigation.

According to preliminary findings, the suspects were en route to meet a man named Muhammad Walo, who was expected to introduce them to one Mallam Mashiru—a self-proclaimed spiritualist claiming he could “transform” counterfeit dollars into genuine currency through ritual prayers.

The EFCC confirmed that the suspects would face prosecution once the investigation concludes.
