Onyeka Onwenu, born on January 31, 1952, was a distinguished Nigerian figure renowned for her diverse career.
On Tuesday night, Onwenu passed away at Reddington Hospital in Lagos after collapsing at the birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli, CEO of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
A native of Arondizuogu in Ideato North, Imo State, Onwenu was raised in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. She was the youngest daughter of D. K. Onwenu, a notable educationist and politician who died in a car accident when she was only four, just a week before his appointment as Minister for Education.
Her remarkable career spanned music, acting, human rights advocacy, journalism, and politics. Known for her powerful voice and magnetic stage presence, she earned the title “Elegant Stallion” from the Nigerian press.
Onwenu served as chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and was a judge on the X Factor series. Her music, including iconic tracks like “One Love” and “You and I,” the latter popularized by Africa Magic, resonates with audiences across generations. Her song “Ekwe” is particularly significant in cultural history for its bold, combative tone reflecting past struggles.
Her influence as a singer/songwriter, actress, and social activist left an enduring impact on Nigerian culture and beyond. In 2022, she released a song titled “Rise Up,” produced in collaboration with the Rose of Sharon Foundation, to highlight the challenges faced by widows in Nigeria and around the world. The foundation is led by Folorunsho Alakija, one of the world’s wealthiest black women.

Onwenu is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party. She has contested twice to become the Local Council Chairman of her local government and lost at both attempts, but was appointed Chairperson of Imo State Council for Arts and Culture by former Governor Ikedi Ohakim.
On September 16, 2013, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed her the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.
