The body of Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, mother of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has been brought to Abuja for burial after she passed away in Cairo, Egypt, on Friday, March 27, following a brief illness.
Her grandson, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, who represents Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, confirmed the development and burial plans in a statement shared on X on Sunday.
“This is to notify the general public that the remains of our grandmother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, has safely landed in Abuja.
The Janazah Prayer is by 1 p.m. as announced last night. The prayers will take place at the National Mosque and she will be buried at Gudu Cemetery by the grace of God. May Allah SWT bless her soul and all those that passed away before her,” he wrote.
The late Hajiya El-Rufai had reportedly been residing with her son in Cairo before her death.
Her passing comes at a challenging time for the family, as Nasir El-Rufai is currently facing legal proceedings. He was arraigned at a Federal High Court in Kaduna on March 24 over a 10-count charge related to alleged corruption and money laundering, with the case adjourned to March 31 to hear pending applications, including his bail request.
He was, however, temporarily released from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to attend the funeral and mourn with his family.
Several prominent figures, including President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, have expressed condolences and paid tribute to the late matriarch.
