The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has strongly condemned the recent destruction and looting of the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) Industrial Park in Kano. On Thursday, amidst nationwide protests against economic hardship, the facility was attacked and set ablaze by hoodlums.
Addressing journalists on Friday, a day after the incident, Sanusi expressed his sorrow and disapproval of the actions of the youths involved. He urged that such destruction of public assets should not be repeated, emphasizing that the people of Kano must ensure such events do not recur.
“Today is a sad day for the people of Kano due to what happened in the state. We sympathize with all the residents of Kano,” he said. “What happened is unacceptable, and the people of Kano should ensure that it does not happen again. The agents of destruction would hijack peaceful demonstrations and use that opportunity to cause mayhem, resulting in the loss of lives and destruction of properties.”
The Emir voiced his concern over the looting and vandalism of public and private properties during what was meant to be a peaceful protest against hunger and hardship in the country. He noted that the events represented a setback not only for Kano State but for the northern region and the entire country.
He lamented the loss, stating, “The young people who died are our children. The properties that were burnt and stolen belong to the people of Kano. These funds were intended for poverty alleviation, education, and nutrition. The digital center of excellence built by the NCC was meant to educate our youth, provide them with digital training, and prepare them for examinations. The minister was scheduled to visit next week to commission the center. We have vandalized and destroyed the center, wasting millions of naira. I urge the people of Kano not to allow a repeat of yesterday’s events or to be misled into further acts of mayhem.”
