Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi has commended Abdullahi Ganduje for resigning as national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
NewsClick Nigeria reports that Ganduje resigned as national chairman of the ruling party on Friday stating health concerns.
“I must commend Dr Ganduje for prioritising his health above all else,” Obi said in a post on X.
“With his health reportedly in decline, it is both wise and honourable to step aside, knowing that he may no longer be able to render the level of service required by the party, the people, and the nation.”
He described Ganduje’s decision as exemplary and a challenge to other leaders who are medically unfit but still cling to power.
“By this exemplary action, Dr Ganduje has thrown a challenge to other leaders who, due to health-related issues, are no longer able to deliver optimally. I sincerely hope they take a cue from him,” he wrote.
Obi said the challenges facing Nigeria require leaders who are “not only competent but also physically and mentally fit”.
“At this critical point and difficult time, we can no longer afford leadership defined by medical tourism, long holidays, or absenteeism caused by age-related ailments,” he said.
“These things are taking a serious toll on our development.”
He wished Ganduje a peaceful and fulfilling retirement.
Meanwhile, the ruling party has confirmed Ganduje’s resignation and also announced a new chairman in acting capacity.
Felix Morka, national publicity secretary of the party, said the resignation would enable the former governor of Kano to attend to “urgent and important” personal matters.
