The number of estimated electricity customers rose by 10.22 per cent to 6.43 million in Q1 2024, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
his contrasts with the 5.83 million recorded in Q4 2023, as stated in the NBS report titled ‘Electricity Report for Q1 2024,’ released in Abuja on Tuesday.
“On a year-on-year basis, estimated customers increased by 7.88 per cent in Q1 2024 from the 5.96 million recorded in Q1 2023,” it stated.
The review centers on the energy billed, revenue generated, and customer statistics of electricity distribution companies during the period under review.
In the transition from the fourth quarter of 2023 to the first quarter of 2024, the number of electricity consumers grew by 210,000, reaching 12.33 million from 12.12 million. This marks a 1.78 percent increase.
Comparing Q1 2024 to the same period last year, there was a notable 9.47 percent rise in the number of electricity customers, reaching 12.33 million from 11.27 million.
During Q1 2024, the count of metered customers reached 5.91 million, contrasting with the 5.61 million recorded in Q4 2023, representing a 5.38 percent upsurge.
“On a year-on-year basis, the figure grew by 11.26 per cent from the 5.31 million reported in Q1 2023,’’ it said.
The NBS also indicated that electricity distribution companies amassed N291.62 billion in revenue during Q1 2024, a slight decrease from the N294.95 billion recorded in Q4 2023.
Furthermore, it highlighted a noteworthy 17.91 percent increase in revenue collected year-on-year, surpassing the N247.33 billion collected in Q1 2023.
Regarding electricity supply, it amounted to 5,769 (Gwh) in the first quarter of 2024, down from 6,432 (Gwh) in the fourth quarter of 2023.
Nevertheless, the report noted a 1.41 percent decline in electricity supply year-on-year during Q1 2024, compared to the 5,851 (Gwh) reported in Q1 2023.
