The European Union has introduced a €4.5 million conflict prevention and resilience programme in Sokoto State, designed to tackle insecurity, climate-related pressures, displacement, and socio-economic challenges affecting local communities.

The initiative, known as RECAP — Resilience, Engagement and Conflict Prevention for At-Risk Populations’ Protection in Sokoto State — was formally launched on Wednesday during an External Stakeholders Grant Opening Meeting in Sokoto.

The 18-month project is financed by the EU and implemented by Action Against Hunger Nigeria in collaboration with International Alert and Save The Child Initiative. It will be delivered across 10 local government areas and is expected to reach over 537,000 beneficiaries.

Speaking at the launch, Xenia Stoll said the EU remains committed to supporting peacebuilding, social cohesion and human security in north-western Nigeria.

Stoll stated, “The European Union values the relationship with Sokoto State. We support the governor and state authorities in their efforts to provide stability and prosperity for their population.

“Through the RECAP project we jointly commit to conflict prevention, social cohesion and human security in Northwest Nigeria. By addressing the root causes of violence such as exclusion, resource competition and economic marginalisation, this action strengthens local capacities for peace and contributes to long-term stability in Sokoto State.”

Representing the Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Commissioner for Health Abubakar Umar described the intervention as timely, stressing that the state faces rising insecurity, climate stress, and resource-based conflicts.

Abubakar said, “It is with great honour to address you today on this important occasion marking another milestone in our collective effort to promote peace, resilience and sustainability in Sokoto State.”

He added that the government would fully support implementation, noting that the project aligns with state development priorities and requires strong coordination and community participation.

Thierno Samba Diallo also emphasised the importance of inclusive peacebuilding, stating that sustainable solutions must go beyond crisis response and focus on long-term resilience.

He said the initiative would strengthen trust, empower women and young people, and promote community-led recovery efforts in conflict-affected areas.

The RECAP programme forms part of broader EU engagement in Sokoto State, covering humanitarian support, governance strengthening, and collaboration with civil society, religious and traditional institutions to promote stability and development.
