Ex-police officers appeal Tinubu to sign police exit bill into law

Retired officers of the Nigeria Police Force have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to sign the Police Exit Bill into law, saying it would improve their welfare and remove them from the Contributory Pension Scheme.

The appeal was made by the Police Retired Officers Forum of Nigeria in Akure, where they lamented poor pensions and gratuities, which they described as insufficient for decent living after service. The group’s coordinator, CSP Raphael Irowainu (retd), said more than 30,000 members are seeking exemption from the scheme, similar to what has been granted to other security agencies.

He noted that the bill had already been passed by the National Assembly in December 2025 and forwarded to the President for approval.

He stressed that the demand is about fairness and justice for retired officers who feel neglected after years of service.

The group argued that uncertainty about life after retirement affects morale and performance while officers are still in active service, adding that better welfare would improve professionalism and reduce misconduct within the force.

They also called on Tinubu to approve the bill, saying it would be a significant step toward strengthening national security and improving confidence in the police system.

The retirees warned that they may embark on a nationwide peaceful protest if the bill is not signed into law before June 22, 2026.
