Mary Amaechi, mother of Rotimi Amaechi, Vice-Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), is dead.

In a statement, the media office of the former Rivers state governor said Mary died on Thursday at the age of 89.

“Late Mrs Mary Amaechi was a cherished matriarch who held her family together in love, peace and unity,” the statement reads.

“She was a community women leader and Christian leader, whose belief and faith in God were firm and resolute.

“She was loved and highly respected in her community and will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering support for those around her and beyond.

“Rt Hon. Amaechi and the entire family are profoundly grateful for the outpouring of condolences and love already being shown them during this difficult time.”

Amaechi’s media office added that details of the funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.

In June, the ADC named Amaechi as the running mate to Atiku Abubakar, its presidential candidate, for the 2027 elections.

Atiku won the ADC presidential primary in May.

He polled 1,846,370 votes to defeat Amaechi, who got 504,117 votes

Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, former managing director of the defunct FSB International Bank, came third with 177,120 votes.
