Explosion rocks Tony Okocha-Led Rivers APC secretariat as LG election holds

Explosives caused significant damage to buildings and property at the Tony Okocha-led All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat located on Aba Road, Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The blast, which occurred on Saturday morning during the local government elections in the state, destroyed the gate and shattered the doors of the secretariat.

In an interview with Channels TV, Tony Okocha, the Chairman of the APC faction in Rivers State, recounted the details of the incident.

“About 3:20am some gun-trotting young men with their explosives and all that, came here and dropped the first explosive, maybe because the one they dropped here did not detonate, they came back the second time to burn the structure – look at the security house is gone.

“Behind me you will see that there was also an attempt, our people came and we were able to quench the fire,” Okocha said.

Windows shattered by the explosives

Tony Okocha alleged that the explosion was politically motivated, accusing Governor Siminalayi Fubara of being responsible. He claimed the governor had previously declared a “war” over the local government elections.

“Is APC secretariat here any voting unit? There is no voting unit here. So, it was deliberate to see how they can annihilate us, it is deliberate to see how they can embarrass us, it is deliberate to see how they can decimate us,” Okocha said.

The police have yet to issue a statement regarding the explosion.

Meanwhile, despite the controversies surrounding the Rivers State local government elections, accreditation and voting have commenced at numerous polling centers across Port Harcourt City.
