The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the temporary closure of Runway 18R/36L at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos for rehabilitation work.
The closure, set for March 3 and 4, follows the runway’s recent reopening just two weeks ago after an 11-month maintenance shutdown.
In a memo dated February 28, FAAN’s Head of Operations, J.U. Nwosu, highlighted safety concerns, noting that construction equipment at the A2 Taxiway-link could pose risks to aircraft during landing and takeoff.
Addressed to the Airport Manager and Regional General Manager for the Southwest Region, the memo underscored the importance of the closure to mitigate operational hazards.
During the period of closure, all flight operations will be redirected to the shorter domestic runway, 18L/36R. While this runway remains operational, its limited capacity may result in delays for both domestic and international flights.
FAAN has instructed its technical departments to enhance security measures, conduct thorough facility inspections, and implement 24-hour surveillance to ensure uninterrupted operations during this time.
