The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State, for essential repairs and resurfacing.
FAAN said the proposed closure is tentatively scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, and last approximately 25 days, subject to final confirmation.
The authority, in a statement by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, said the intervention became necessary following the deterioration of sections of the runway.
It cited potholes and extensive surface cracks, which it said had been worsened by recent heavy rainfall.
According to FAAN, the rehabilitation will involve pavement repairs, treatment of cracks and resurfacing of affected sections to improve the runway’s operational condition.
The authority said the work was also being planned ahead of the anticipated increase in passenger and flight traffic during the Christmas season.
FAAN added that the project would include an extension of the runway, which would enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as air traffic to the region grows.
It said the expansion was expected to improve passenger comfort and facilitate smoother travel operations at the airport.
The authority advised passengers planning to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure period to maintain contact with their airlines for updates on flight schedules and possible alternative arrangements.
FAAN said it would continue consultations with relevant stakeholders and communicate the confirmed closure and reopening dates once they were finalised.
The authority appealed to airport users for their understanding and cooperation, stressing that the planned intervention was part of efforts to maintain safe, efficient and reliable airport operations.
