Family announces burial plans for Nigerian student who died while traveling to London

The family of the late Meshioye Remilekun, a Nigerian student who died aboard EgyptAir on her way to London, has announced her burial arrangement.

According to a statement released on Monday by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, spokesperson of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), the family will receive Remilekun’s remains from Cairo on Wednesday.

Remilekun died on September 4 in Cairo while aboard an EgyptAir MS 876 flight en route to London, where she was studying.

The family demanded that the airline take responsibility for the death of the 41-year-old.

NIDCOM had also petitioned EgyptAir, seeking clarification on the incident and demanded justice for the late student.

Speaking ahead of the burial, Lola Olaniyi-Alabi, the deceased sister, said the airline refused to console the family or accept the responsibility of bringing the corpse to Nigeria — in line with global aviation rules.

She added that the family decided to repatriate Remilekun’s body following EgyptAir’s refusal.

Olaniyi-Alabi said the burial would be a three-day event, beginning with the arrival of the body.

She added that there would be a service of songs at the Winners Chapel Ogba, Lagos, on Thursday at 4 p.m., while the burial would be held at Matori Cemetery Ladipo near Oshodi Bus Terminus, Lagos, at 10 am on Friday.
