The family of Ms. Namitra Bwala, a student of Lead British International School in Gwarinpa, Abuja, has initiated a civil lawsuit against the school.
This legal action follows the widespread circulation of a video on the internet a few weeks ago, depicting Ms. Bwala being subjected to bullying by her fellow students.
The family is also pursuing a claim for the sum of N500 million and a public apology in two national newspapers as compensation for general damages. They assert that the school failed in its duty to provide a safe and conducive learning environment for their daughter.
The lawsuit, filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja, alleges that the school’s failure to prevent the assault, promptly inform her parents, and conduct an investigation until the video gained traction on social media while she was under the school’s supervision constitutes negligence.
They are optimistic that this legal action will prompt significant changes and the implementation of adequate measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring at the school.
