FEC approves establishment of Humanitarian Trust Fund to raise $5bn annually

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has authorised the establishment of a Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund.

Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, disclosed this while briefing State House media shortly after the FEC meeting on Monday at the Presidential Villa Abuja.

She stated that the trust fund will allow the Federal Government to respond quickly to humanitarian emergencies in the country.

According to her, the federal government hopes to contribute at least $5 billion to the trust fund each year.

According to Edu, the cash will come from the Federal Government, corporate and international organisations, and well-meaning individuals.

She also assured that state governments will be carried along in the project.

On the care for the elderly, the minister said FEC took a decision to ratify the protocol for the protection of the rights of old people in the country in line with the African Charter.
