FEMA raises alarm of strong winds in 12 states

The Federal Emergency Management Authority (FEMA) has issued a warning that states surrounding the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) should expect strong winds over the next three days.

This advisory comes in response to an impact-based weather forecast provided by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

According to a statement signed by Nkechi Isa, FEMA’s Head of Public Affairs, the agency is urging residents in the affected areas to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant during this period of anticipated strong winds.

“States contiguous to the Federal Capital Territory, like Nasarawa, Niger and Kaduna are to experience very strong winds within the next three days. Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe, Borno and Adamawa states will also experience strong winds. The forecast warns that moderate risk hazards may occur due to the strong winds,” the statement read.

It stated that the strong winds may likely cause displacements of people and isolated cases of damage to weak structures.

“Mindful of the fact that climatic changes in some of these states, particularly Nasarawa, may impact the Federal Capital Territory, FEMA is closely monitoring the situation,” it added.

Dr. Abbas Idriss, the Director General of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has announced that the agency’s Search and Rescue teams are on high alert. He has cautioned residents to be careful during heavy rainfall and advised them to avoid driving through areas with a pool of water.

Dr. Idriss has also made an appeal to residents to clear any blocked drains and refrain from constructing buildings on water channels. He assured the public of FEMA’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property. In case of emergencies, he urged residents to utilize the toll-free number 112 for assistance.
