Ferrari stolen from former F1 driver in 1995 recovered by police
Police have recovered a rare Ferrari that was stolen 28 years ago from a former Formula One driver in London.
The Metropolitan Police announced the recovery of a red Ferrari F512M that was stolen from Gerhard Berger in 1995 and subsequently shipped to Japan.
The car, valued at £350,000, was one of two Ferraris stolen at the time, with the other still missing.
Working closely with Ferrari and international car dealerships, police conducted a thorough investigation to locate the vehicle. Despite their efforts, no arrests have been made thus far.
The theft occurred in April 1995 while Mr. Berger was attending the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, Italy.
Through the efforts of the police’s organised vehicle crime unit and the National Crime Agency, it was discovered that the car had been in Japan until it was brought back to the UK in late 2023.
Ferrari became aware of the situation in January after conducting checks on the model, which had been purchased by a buyer in the US.
PC Mike Pilbeam said: “The stolen Ferrari – close to the value of £350,000 – was missing for more than 28 years before we managed to track it down in just four days.”
