The Federal Government has distanced itself from claims that it has opened applications for a ₦50,000 National Support Allowance, warning Nigerians not to fall for the fraudulent scheme.
The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, in a statement posted on its official X account on Sunday, said reports suggesting that registration for the allowance had begun were false.
According to the ministry, fraudsters are circulating fake messages and online links to deceive members of the public into believing the programme is genuine.
It urged Nigerians to ignore the claims and confirm information about government social intervention programmes only through official channels.
“The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction has NOT commenced registration for any ₦50,000 National Support Allowance,” the ministry said.
It added, “Disregard fraudulent messages, links and websites claiming otherwise. Verify any info only through official govt channels.”
The ministry explained that its warning followed the circulation of a misleading flyer alleging that the allowance was being introduced under the directive of President Bola Tinubu.
The fake advert, produced in English and Hausa, encourages applicants to register through a suspicious website.
The ministry noted that the scam appears designed to exploit people seeking government assistance and advised Nigerians to exercise caution when responding to online offers promising financial support.
It also recalled that similar fake registration exercises had surfaced in the past around government empowerment programmes, urging the public to remain vigilant and avoid sharing personal information with unverified websites.
