The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a new group life insurance scheme for federal civil servants and key government personnel.

The decision was taken at the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja.

According to the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, the scheme will provide life insurance cover for top officials, including the President, Vice President, ministers, permanent secretaries, and employees of ministries and treasury-funded agencies.

It will also extend to personnel of paramilitary bodies such as the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Civil Defence Corps, the Correctional Service, the Federal Fire Service, the FRSC, NDLEA, and staff of the Office of the National Security Adviser.

Walson-Jack described the scheme as a vital welfare measure that offers financial relief to the families of deceased public servants, ensuring next of kin receive benefits in the event of death in service.

“This underscores the Tinubu administration’s commitment to staff welfare,” she said.

The scheme, renewed annually, covers the 2025/2026 policy year and takes effect upon payment of premiums to insurers, in line with the “no premium, no cover” policy.

Seventeen insurance underwriters have been appointed to implement the cover for the policy period, which will expire in 2026.

Walson-Jack noted that while the scheme has existed under successive governments, public awareness remains limited. She added that a sensitisation campaign will be launched to inform civil servants of their entitlements under the scheme.
