The government at the federal level has granted authorization for the disbursement of a distinct allowance amounting to N25,000, specifically intended for medical and dental doctors serving in hospitals, medical centers, and clinics within the federal public service.

This was disclosed in a letter dated July 26, 2023, titled, “Accoutrement allowance for medical and dental doctors in hospitals, medical centres, and clinics in federal MDAs.”

The letter was signed by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the commission, Ekpo Nta.

The letter read, “The Federal Government has approved the payment of an Accoutrement allowance of twenty-five naira (N25,000.00) per quarter to Medical and Dental Doctors in hospitals, medical centres, and clinics in the Federal Public Service. The allowance is to be paid from the overhead budget.

“The approval takes effect from June 1, 2023. All enquires relating to this circular should be directed to the Commission.”

According to reports, the issuance of the circular concerning the allowance appears to be related to the current indefinite strike being carried out by members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors.

Meanwhile, Dr. Emeka Oji, the President of NARD, stated in a recent interview with The PUNCH that doctors are requesting approximately a 500 per cent salary increase from the government.
