FG begins payment of teachers’ withheld salaries

The Federal Government has started paying teachers who benefited from the extension of service tenure granted to federal employees by President  Muhammadu Buhari’s administration their withheld salaries.

President Buhari’s announcement of various incentives for teachers on World Teachers’ Day, including a new compensation scale and a rise in the retirement age from 60 to 65 years was earlier reported in 2020.

However, from March 2021 to March 2023, the pay of some of the benefitted teachers s were withheld.

On Sunday, senior officials from the Federal Ministries of Education, Finance, Budget, and National Planning announced that the withheld salaries have started to be paid.

“I can confirm to you that they have started receiving their salaries. They also received the arrears of the peculiar allowances. All arrears of salaries will be paid in full”.

Confirming the development, one of the benefiting teachers in Ilorin the Kwara State capital said, “It is true.

“We have started receiving. Though we only got the one for April 2023, we have been reassured that the arrears will be cleared.”
