The Federal Government has begun reconstruction of the failed expansion joint on Kara Bridge (Outward Lagos) along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
A statement signed by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Lagos Sector Command’s Public Education Officer, SRC Elizabeth Jayeola, said repair work commenced on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, and is expected to last two weeks.
Quoting Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat, the FRSC described the reconstruction as a critical safety intervention designed to prevent crashes, preserve the structural integrity of the bridge and ensure safer travel for all road users.
Hamzat explained that to provide a safe working environment for the construction team, the existing four-lane carriageway would be temporarily reduced to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch, a move that will inevitably cause traffic congestion, particularly along the outward Lagos-Ibadan corridor.
To ease pressure on the affected route, the Sector Commander appealed to organisations, institutions and businesses whose operations allow for remote work to permit their employees to work from home during the reconstruction period, noting that this would significantly cut down vehicular traffic and spare commuters unnecessary delays.
Motorists have also been advised to plan their journeys in advance, travel outside peak hours where possible, and use alternative routes such as the Ikorodu-Sagamu Expressway and the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
Corps Commander Hamzat urged motorists to remain patient, drive with caution, obey traffic officials deployed along the corridor and comply with all traffic advisories throughout the construction period.
He warned against driving against traffic or flouting traffic management measures, stressing that anyone caught violating the rules would be apprehended and sanctioned in line with the National Road Traffic Regulations.
The FRSC Lagos Sector Command said it had deployed adequate traffic control personnel and operational resources in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works, the Ogun State Ministry of Transportation, traffic management agencies and other emergency responders, to minimise disruption and ensure the safety of both motorists and construction workers.
The Command appealed for the understanding, patience and cooperation of all road users, noting that the temporary inconvenience was a necessary step towards delivering a safer and more durable Kara-Opic Bridge for the benefit of the motoring public.
