The Federal Government has cancelled the parade earlier planned to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary on October 1.
The announcement was made on Monday in a statement issued by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).
According to the statement, the government apologised for any inconvenience caused by the decision.
“The cancellation in no way diminishes the significance of this milestone anniversary. The government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm,” the statement read.
It further confirmed that all other events scheduled as part of the Independence celebrations would go ahead as planned.
“The Federal Government appreciates the understanding, support, and cooperation of all Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests. It also urges citizens to support the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in the effort to build a greater nation,” it added.
The Independence Day parade is traditionally one of the main events marking the annual celebration, which this year is themed “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation.”
The announcement follows the government’s declaration of Wednesday as a public holiday to commemorate the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
