The Federal Government has disbursed over ₦300 billion to 8.1 million households under the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) scheme.

Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, revealed this on Monday during a roundtable event in Abuja marking the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

According to Sununu, the initiative—implemented under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda—has significantly improved the welfare of beneficiaries across the country.

“Through the National Social Investment Agency, over 8.1 million households have benefited from the Conditional Cash Transfer scheme, with a total disbursement of more than ₦300 billion. This support has boosted their resilience, improved their health, and enhanced access to education,” he said.

Sununu also announced that 21,000 Nigerians affected by recent flood disasters would receive interest-free loans amounting to ₦6.3 billion.

“We are working with both national and state authorities to provide ₦300,000 each as interest- and collateral-free loans to 21,000 flood victims to support recovery and reduce the impact of flooding on agriculture,” he stated.

The Minister further disclosed a new empowerment scheme designed to help internally displaced persons (IDPs) become self-reliant through agriculture.

“In partnership with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, we have developed a programme that allows IDPs to cultivate food crops. The government will buy 70% of their produce, while 30% remains for their use. The proceeds from government purchases will be paid directly to the IDPs as cash incentives,” he explained.

Earlier, NEMA Director General Zubaida Umar highlighted the increasing impact of climate change, conflicts, pandemics, and technological risks on Nigeria’s disaster landscape. She emphasized the need for a proactive and well-financed disaster management strategy.

“We must move from ad-hoc emergency funding to a structured, multi-stakeholder financing framework that prioritizes prevention, preparedness, and sustainable recovery,” Umar said.

She also announced the launch of two key policy documents — the NEMA Strategic Plan (2025–2029) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy (2025–2030) — aimed at strengthening disaster resilience and institutional collaboration across sectors.

The event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, lawmakers, and international development partners.
