The Federal Government has donated ₦500 million to the Nigerian Legion.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, announced this donation at the launch of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration Emblem and Appeal Fund at the State House in Abuja.
In a statement on Tuesday, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga conveyed that President Bola Tinubu commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their steadfast efforts to address the nation’s various security challenges.
“No matter what economic theories we propose, if there is no security, we cannot promote peace and development,” President Tinubu remarked.
“I am grateful to all of you on behalf of the country. The challenges are severe, but you are this country’s first line of defence. Thank you for your patriotic commitment to Nigeria’s unity, stability, and progress.”
President Tinubu further stressed that the welfare of the security forces would remain a top priority for the government. He honoured those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the nation, assuring that their sacrifices would not be forgotten.
“Today, we remember our fallen heroes—men and women who have given their lives for Nigeria’s unity, stability, and progress. We are committed to their values, principles, beliefs, and to the unity and strength of this country, ensuring we pass on an unstained banner to the next generation,” he said.
“It is a privilege to launch the emblem once again. The welfare of our service personnel will continue to be a top priority. I thank you all.”
Defence Minister Abubakar Badaru expressed appreciation to Tinubu for his support of the welfare of the armed forces, including both serving and retired personnel, as well as the families of those who have fallen.
“Unveiling this Emblem serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder of our collective responsibility to uplift our Armed Forces and their families. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is not just a commemoration but a call to action,” said the minister.
“Therefore, this Appeal Fund we are launching today to provide crucial support to our veterans and their families is essential. The funds raised will directly support welfare programmes, including healthcare, education, and financial assistance.”
Among those present at the event were Vice President Kashim Shettima; Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas; members of the Federal Executive Council; service chiefs; heads of other security and paramilitary agencies; and representatives of the Nigerian Legion.
