FG meets with Labour leaders over increase in petrol price

The Federal Government on Wednesday convened with the leadership of the Organised Labour at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, in Abuja.

The Federal Government’s delegation was led by Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris. The Organised Labour team was headed by Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Nuhu Toro, Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

Attending the meeting were the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha; Minister of Finance, Wale Edun; and Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu.

While the specifics of the meeting’s agenda were not disclosed, the Organised Labour has expressed dissatisfaction with the recent increases in petrol pump prices, electricity tariffs, soaring inflation, and the overall high cost of living in the country.

Last week, retail outlets operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) raised the pump price of petrol in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

In Lagos, NNPCL stations now charge ₦998 per litre, an increase of about ₦150 from the previous price of ₦855.

Similarly, in Abuja, NNPCL retail outlets raised the price from ₦897 to ₦1,030 per litre.

This recent price hike follows the increase on September 2, 2024, when the NNPCL raised the price of petrol from ₦568 to ₦855, which had already caused public outrage. Prior to that, the price per litre was increased from ₦184 to ₦568 last June.
