The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Tanko Sununu, said on Monday that the Federal Government remained committed to tackling poverty across the country.
Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Sununu revealed that more than two million poor households had been enrolled in the social register and would soon begin receiving government cash transfers.
“In the coming days, before the end of August, we are set to reach 2.2 million households. The National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) identifies vulnerable Nigerians through the lowest cadre in the national social register,” he explained.
Sununu noted that the current administration had already rolled out interventions to support the poor and vulnerable, with significant progress recorded under the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) scheme.
“So far, we have disbursed ₦419 billion to five million Nigerians under the rapid conditional cash transfer programme. Of this, 71 per cent went to the northern region and 21 per cent to the southern region,” the minister said.
