A fire outbreak at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, triggered panic among travellers and airport users on Sunday.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the incident, stating that emergency response teams were immediately deployed to contain the blaze.
In a statement issued on its official platform, the authority said:
“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) wishes to inform the public that a fire incident has occurred at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.”
It added, “The FAAN Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) is currently responding to the incident and working diligently to contain the situation.”
FAAN also assured the public that no injuries or fatalities had been recorded since the incident occurred.
“There have been no reported casualties or loss of life. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” the statement added.
The latest fire incident comes only months after a similar emergency at Terminal 1 of the Lagos airport.
In February, a fire at the terminal destroyed key air-to-ground communication systems operated by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), forcing air traffic controllers to depend on emergency backup equipment to maintain flight operations.
Reacting to the earlier incident, NAMA Managing Director, Farouk Umar, described the destruction as a major setback to aviation activities, saying the fire had “affected our air-to-ground communication completely.”
