Fire guts Lagos shopping mall

Early on Wednesday, a fire completely destroyed a commercial complex at Ligali Ayorinde crossroads in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Firefighters are seen attempting to douse the flames in a social media video that is currently trending.

Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, the Lagos Coordinator for the National Emergency Management Agency, verified the incident to our correspondent.

He said that coordinated efforts from the Federal and Lagos State fire agencies had put out the fire.

“The fire incident happened at a shopping centre but it has been handled by Federal and state fire services,” Farinloye said.

The NEMA Lagos Coordinator stated that an investigation was proceeding into the incident’s potential causes and that the report will be made public once it was finished.

It was earlier reported on April 13, 2022, how a fire incident in Lagos’ Maryland neighborhood had caused chaos. It was discovered that the incident resulted in traffic jams in the neighborhood as commuters, locals, and onlookers sprinted for safety.

“We don’t have a detailed record of the incident. The disco has disconnected the power supply to the powerline. No casualty and no injury,” Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs Margaret Adeseye, said.

“The Ikeja Electric Distribution have been contacted to rectify the depot. A high tension cable fell on the ground and caused sparkling and spread to the Underbridge Street light. There is no cause for alarm since yesterday,” the agency said in an update.
