Five die in Anambra road crash

The Anambra State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that five people lost their lives in a road accident along the Nnewi-Okigwe Road near Chisco Park Junction in Amichi, located in Nnewi South Local Government Area.

The tragic incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Friday, when a tipper truck reportedly suffered brake failure and rammed into pedestrians, resulting in multiple casualties.

In a press statement, Sector Public Education Officer Margaret Onabe revealed that five others were injured in the crash.

She stated that a total of 10 individuals were involved—four adult males, one adult female, three male children, and two female children.

According to her, preliminary investigations suggest that the crash was caused by brake failure.

She said, “The truck, traveling at high speed, suffered brake failure and collided with other vehicles and pedestrians. The vehicles involved included a Mercedes-Benz truck with registration number NNE 893 ZG, a Honda motorcycle, and a Qlink motorcycle, among others.

“The Federal Road Safety Corps rescue team, after receiving the call this morning (Saturday), arrived at the crash scene within 31 minutes. The team managed traffic control at the crash site and visited the hospitals where the victims were taken.

“Reports from the Anglican Diocesan Hospital in Amichi indicated that six persons were brought to the facility, among whom three were confirmed dead on arrival, while one died later.

“The remaining two victims are currently responding to treatment. Reports from Pat Angelina Hospital in Amichi indicate that four victims were admitted with bruises and bone injuries. One male adult was confirmed dead, and the others are all responding to treatment.”
