A fatal road accident in Langtang North Local Government Area of Plateau State has resulted in the deaths of five people, with 13 others injured.
Online gathered that the crash occurred around 3 a.m. on Sunday at the Zangzat Roundabout in Langtang. It involved a trailer transporting marketers from Shendam to Jos, the state capital.
The incident was confirmed by the Chairman of Langtang North Local Government Area, Pirfa Tyem, in a statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Precious Yakubu.
According to him, initial findings showed that the vehicle, registered in Plateau State with plate number JJN 383 YZ, was involved in the crash due to excessive speed and overloading.
He said, “Preliminary reports indicate that the accident involved a Plateau State-registered vehicle with plate number JJN 383 YZ.
“Upon receiving the report, the Executive Chairman immediately directed a team from the Local Government Council to visit the scene of the accident and the hospital to assess the situation, sympathise with the victims, and ascertain their immediate needs.
“The incident led to the tragic loss of five lives, while about thirteen persons sustained varying degrees of injuries.
“The injured victims are currently receiving medical attention at the General Hospital, Langtang.”
The council chairman extended his condolences to the families of those who died and prayed for the quick recovery of the injured.
Describing the crash as unfortunate, he warned against reckless driving and non-compliance with traffic regulations, urging the Federal Road Safety Corps to step up public awareness campaigns and enforcement.
He also advised drivers, transport operators, marketers, and commuters to observe speed limits and avoid overloading, stressing the importance of safety.
“The Council remains committed to collaborating with relevant agencies to promote road safety across the local government area,” the statement added.
The accident occurred barely a week after PUNCH Online reported a fuel tanker crash near St. Louis College in Jos that claimed two lives and left 16 others injured.
With the latest incident in Langtang, the death toll from road accidents across Plateau State in the last two weeks has risen to 25.
