The Federal Government has urged Nigerians to clear their canals, drainages, and gutters to help reduce the risk of flooding.
In a dam update report released on Sunday by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), water levels at key stations along the River Benue have been steadily rising, approaching flood levels.
The statement, signed by NIHSA’s Head of Media and Publicity, Lauretta Samuel, noted that as of Saturday, water levels were still increasing but remained within the flood preparedness range.
Samuel also called on the 12 flood-prone states previously warned by NIHSA to implement measures to either contain the rising waters or allow for proper flow.
This comes after a recent overflow of the Alau Dam caused severe flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State, marking one of the worst flood incidents in Nigeria’s history.
