Flooding: Govt orders closure of Delta varsity

The government has ordered a two-week closure of Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro, due to the devastating flood that has severely affected areas of the institution.

Dr. Kingsley Ashibuogwu, the state’s commissioner for higher education, made the announcement on Friday while visiting the university urgently to assess the effects of the flood there.

The Commissioner stated that it was no longer safe for students to stay on campus due to the extent of water.

Environmental sciences, computer science, and administration and management were the faculties most severely impacted by the flood.

The Institution Health Centre, the Faculty of Agriculture, the House of the Generator Plant, the Staff Club, and the administrative building of the university were among the others.

However, the Commissioner assured that the state government was on top of the situation to ensure that students were safely evacuated from the school. The Commissioner expressed shock at the extent and impact of the devastating flood on the university.

He said that it was hoped that the flood would have subsided during the two-week period.

The Higher Education Commissioner informed students and the school administration that classes will resume as soon as the floodwaters subsided while stating that the action was done for the benefit and safety of students and employees in the university community.
